IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award Details

The IIHS is a nonprofit organization that works to educate the public and protect drivers from injuries and accidents. Through comprehensive research and testing, the organization awards vehicles safety ratings based on crashworthiness and crash avoidance and mitigation. These ratings are compiled from various safety tests such as frontal crash tests, side crash tests, roof strength tests, front crash prevention, and headlight evaluation.

Winning Mazda CX-5 Advanced Safety Features

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 passed these tests with flying colors, earning the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, which is the highest rating awarded by the organization. The Mazda CX-5 excelled in crashworthiness, crash avoidance, and mitigation — especially thanks to the standard Smart City Brake Support feature and the available Smart Brake Support system.

The standard Advanced City Brake Support system also includes day and nighttime pedestrian detection. The system kicks in at low speeds and up to 50 mph and applies automatic braking if the system warning doesn’t trigger action from the driver.

Smart Brake Support, which is available in 2020 Mazda CX-5 Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature trims, is another tool that helps reduce the likelihood or impact of frontal collisions. This feature activates when operating the vehicle at speeds above 10 mph.
