There are unique benefits to driving a new Mazda PHEV. However, some drivers are unfamiliar with the powertrain, which makes them hesitant to consider one. Heritage Mazda Towson explains how they work to help you shop with confidence.
Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain
A plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) is powered by an internal combustion engine, electric motor, and battery. When you first start your vehicle, a PHEV will prioritize electric power if the battery is charged. This allows you to drive short distances without consuming any fuel or emitting any tailpipe emissions. Once your charge gets too low, your engine can kick in to help or take over, if necessary.
Charging a PHEV
You charge a PHEV in the same way you charge an electric vehicle. You can plug a Level 1 charger into a standard household outlet or charge at a Level 2 charging station, either at home or at a public charging station; Mazda PHEVs are not compatible with Level 3 charging. With regenerative braking, they can also recapture some of their energy lost and partially self-charge. Since they also use an engine for power, don’t forget to keep your gas tank filled.
MAZDA PHEV Models
There are two Mazda PHEVs – the Mazda CX-70 PHEV and the Mazda CX-90 PHEV. The Mazda CX-70 PHEV is a midsize five-passenger SUV with a notable 32-mile electric driving range. The Mazda CX-90 PHEV is a three-row midsize SUV that seats up to six or seven, depending on your cabin configuration. It boasts a 26-mile electric driving range and 500-mile range overall.
